Vision Statement

To provide a community service by offering yoga classes to anyone regardless of age, ability, gender. gender orientation, race or income.

To offer respect, encouragement and support to every student.

To maintain integrity in the yoga poses as well as in business practices.

To be students first so that our knowledge of yoga continues to develop.

Our yoga instructors

Tracy started her yoga journey in 2007 and became a certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher in September 2014. She teaches several weekly classes and will be offering some shorter series and workshops this year, including an Introduction to Pranayama. Tracy enjoys sharing the teachings and the sense of community within the studio.

Tracy teaches the Tuesday and Thursday Level I class from 5:00 to 6:00 pm, the Focus on Inversions class from noon to 1 pm on Tuesday for all levels, and Introduction to Yoga class on Monday nights from 6:30 to 7:30, and an Introduction to Pranayama class once a month 10:15-11:15 am on Sunday.


The study and practice of yoga has improved Missi's life on many levels. It is fun and interesting. Join her to explore! You are never too old or too stiff to begin.

Missi is a Level 2 Iyengar yoga teacher with a background in skating and teaching. She is the mother of 5 children and 9 wonderful grandchildren.

Missi teaches the 65+ all levels class on Monday from 11:00 am to noon, the Cancer Recovery class Wednesday 10:00 to 11:30 am with Dori, and a Level 2 class from noon to 1 pm on Thursday.


Dori has enjoyed yoga practice and philosophy for many years. It is an anchor in her life. She assists in the Cancer Recovery Class, on Wednesdays from 10:00 to 11:30 am, where yoga creates the basis for a practical, compassionate refuge. It is a special group of people within our wonderful yoga community.


Mary-Ellen is entering her third year of teacher training and invites anyone interested in exploring the foundations of yoga to join her  Level 1 class Wednesday evenings, 6:30-7:45.

Mary-Ellen'syoga journey began in 2007 . Within months she found herself fascinated with the inner personal challenge of  learning to connect with her body from the inside out. The rewards of increased flexibility, lifted spirits and a warm community of support continue to fuel her committment to Iyengar yoga.


Kelly has been studying and teaching in the Iyengar tradition for more than 20 years - 15 of them in Nanaimo. She finds inspiration in social justice, community building and from her students.

Kelly is certified at the Intermediate Level which allows for teacher-mentoring and assistance with physical problems.

Jessica's journey with yoga training began with a 250 hour program. Having dipped her toes in this vast subject she knew it required a much deeper plunge. Iyengar’s method of yoga and teacher training continues to touch her body, mind and heart and she is full of gratitude to have the opportunity to teach and learn from students within this rich and committed Iyengar yoga community.

Jessica teaches the Level 1 Tall Trees class on Fridays from noon-1.

Sarah is in her second year of Iyengar yoga teacher training. With a background in science and teaching, she is drawn to the practice of Iyengar yoga for its sequencing, precision, alignment, and multiple health benefits. Also, the high level of commitment and quality instruction that Iyengar adheres to, appealed to Sarah, as a teacher.   She has been practicing Iyengar yoga for the past 9 years and looks forward to offering beginner and level I classes suited for all ages and abilities!

In search of a practice for personal growth and enjoyment, Nicole began studying yoga at Bend Over Backwards studio.  So strong was yoga's impact that three years later she signed up for the rigorous Iyengar Teacher Training program.  Yoga gives her strength, equanimity and poise in life and in her music career as Principal Timpanist with the Vancouver Island Symphony, and Kindermusik and Suzuki Piano Instructor at the Nanaimo Conservatory.  Join her Wednesdays at noon to cultivate your own strength, equanimity and poise.

Nicole is teaching the Level1 class on Wednesdays from noon-1.

De moved to Nanaimo from Australia in 2001. It was not long after this time that she found Kelly Bend Over Backwards and her Iyengar Yoga journey began.

She started her teacher training in September of 2014 after being inspired by her yoga community.

She is excited to teach as some of her passions include running, cycling and enjoying the outdoors, De feels she could bring her outdoor activities onto the yoga mat.

Where we are located

Classes are located in Kelly's studio at 135 Machleary St. in Nanaimo, BC.There is plenty of free parking on Machleary St. and the studio can be accessed from the street or from the rear alleyway. Please park on the Park-side of Machleary to respect our neighbour's parking needs.
